Chapter 1

Mistkit could feel the warm morning sunshine on her gray fur. Everything around was black for she had not opened her eyes yet. The tiny gray kit snuffled into her mothers warm belly. She had only been born the day before and all she had listened to was the other queens in the nursery talking about the clan. But Mistkit wanted to see what color their fur was. She wanted to know what her mother looked like. All she could do was tell one cat apart from the other by their scent. Mistkit just wanted to see. The little kit then heard her mothers voice.
"Rosefeather, Mistkit will open her eyes when she feels ready, theres nothing wrong with her." She felt Mousedapple's rough tongue swipe over her head. Mistkit then heard another voice.
"Well she should have opened her eyes by now. My kits opened there eyes the night they were born." That must be Rosefeather. Miskit thought. Mousedapple snorted. "She'll open them when she's ready." Her mother repeated, more sternly. Yeah, when I'm ready. Mistkit listened for Rosepetal to deny her mother but the queen had kept he rmouth shut. Mistkit's thoughts whirred through her mind. Should I open them? No, when I'm ready. But am I ready? Should I? Miskit suddenly felt very tired. The small gray she-kit rested her head on her paws and fell asleep. When she woke up, Mistkit could see the nursery. Wait, she could see?! Mistkit looked around. She could see! She had finally opened her eyes. Then, a big white shape lifted it's head and turned to look at Mistkit. Mousedapple!
"You have opened your eyes!" her mother mewed happily. The little kit looked into her mothers eyes. They were a beautiful green. She wondered if her eyes were green too. Mousedapple turned her head a prodded her white paw into a brown queen with darker brown spots. The queen then stirred and looked up.
"Look at Mistkit. Notice anything different, Rosefeather?"
Rosefeather gave a frusturated and turned her head to look at Mistkit.
"Her eyes have opened!" The brown queen exclaimed. Mousedapple lifted her chin. "Theres nothing wrong with Mistkit." Rosefeather looked at Mousedapple, embarressed. "I-I guess I overreacted. My kits just opened their eyes much sooner than Mistkit." Mousedapple snorted and turned to her daughter. She purred with delight and started licking the top of Mistkit's head. Suddenly, a gray and white head peered into the nursery. Mistkit got up on her paws and walked over to the head. A large gray and white tom walked in and looked down on Mistkit. "She has opened her eyes!" he meowed. Mousedapple's eyes sparkled at the big tom and she walked over to him. The two cats touched noses and purred. "Mistkit, this is your father, Rockclaw." Mousedapple purred. Rockclaw crouched down so he was level with Mistkit. "Hi," he said cheerfully. "I'm so glad you opened your eyes. They are such a pretty green, like your mother's." So my eyes are green! she thought. Rockclaw then looked up at Mousedapple.
"Has she spoken yet?" He asked. Mousedapple shook her head. "Not yet." Mistkit peered at her mother and father and squeaked, "Hi!" Rockclaw's eyes lit up and he wrapped his tail around Miskit. He then started to lick the top of her head, like Mousedapple. Mistkit batted his muzzle away and ran around the nursery. Her clumsy kit paws made her run into Rosefeather and her kits, Nightkit, Breezekit, and Blossomkit. She then tripped over a mossball and and tripped. She landed with a thud. "I'm okay!" she squeaked. "She sure has a lot of energy." Mewed Rockclaw. Then, a cat yowled from outside the nursery and Rockclaw turned his head. "I have to go on a patrol." he mewed. Rockclaw touched noses with Mousedapple and came over to Mistkit, who was batting at her tail. "I'll see you later, silly kit." Mistkit scrambled to her paws as she watched her father pad out of the nursery. Mousedapple walked over to her and started licking the top of her head again, purring loudly.
